Jamar Smith, a University of Illinois basketball player will serve 24 months probation after pleading guilty Thursday for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Smith drove under the influence of alcohol and his car struck a tree, critically injuring his teammate Brian Carlwell, who was with him in the car.
"Smith will receive no good time credit on his jail time because of the severity of the injuries to his teammate, Brian Carlwell," said Julia Rietz , Champaign County State's Attorney.
The two teammates, both 19, were too young to legally consume alcohol but had been drinking tequila and beer before the incident on the night of February 12. According to the authorities, Smith’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
After the crash, Police say that Smith believed that Carlwell was dead and drove the damaged car out of the accident scene to his apartment at the nearby town of Savoy.
"What I did not only put myself in harm's way, but I also put a teammate and anyone else that was on the road that night in danger," Smith says, apologizing at his court appearance.
According to Rietz, under the terms of Smith's plea agreement, the UI basketball player will serve 100 hours of public service and take 75 hours of substance abuse classes, and also pay $850 in fines and $150 in lab fees and court costs. |
